Emm Bee Aay.
This post would have been titled “That This That Was Left Out Those Two Times” but then Vasudha Pande pwned me so I had to think up something new. You made a lazy guy think up new titles, V, God will not forgive you for that.
Anyway, the exams have finally, finally ended and I have about a month and half of summer vacations now. You would expect I’d enjoy, watch movies, hang out with friends or at least laze around if nothing else. But it doesn’t work like that. There’s a new chapter in the life and times of ME. Notice the pompous beginning? I’ve always wished that my life be so exciting that someday somebody writes a book on it. Right now that book would have about 3 pages – The title, the contents and Chapter 1 which still needs to be written. So, anyway, the new thing in life is that I’ve joined MBA coaching classes. Why I’m doing an MBA is a long story so we’ll chuck that. I really don’t know what this chapter would turn out to become. It could be life altering or it could be like re-reading of the previous chapter where I joined Engineering coaching and didn’t end up becoming one. Right now I’m not thinking about the end. Some of you would tell me that it’s stupid to do something without thinking about what happens at the end of it but I really don’t care. I’ve realized that I’m not somebody who gets motivated by aims and targets. If I am to get somewhere, I’ll get there and if I’m not, then setting my eyes on IIM-A, visiting the campus and setting my Facebook status as “Going to IIM-A” won’t help. That’s just not how I function. Besides, I know it’s not my aim. It’s just one of those things that you need to do in order to facilitate the achievement of the aim, or basically just to shut everybody up and to make them let you be on your own. I know I shouldn’t be affected by what people say but that’s just how I am. And it’s not like I haven’t tried changing it. It never worked.
Anyway, the coaching involves 2 hour long classes of Math, Logic and English. I think English is fairly fine, Logic is interesting and Math, well, it’s not that bad after all. I’ve attended about 8 classes and 1 group discussion and they’ve been do-able. But this is just the beginning so you never know what happens as the complexity and stuff increases. Logic is interesting because it makes you work. It’s surprising how you tend to not be able to solve things which have such simple logics behind them and yet you can solve the biggest math question that there is. I’d been thinking, thinking and thinking over the following question for over 2 days and yet I couldn’t come up with an answer:-
A: If I say 6, you say 3. If I say 12, you say 6. If I say 10, what do you say?
B: So simple! It’s 5!
A: Haha, no! It’s 3!
B: Uh oh?!
And you had to tell how 10 became 3. So I kept banging my head, I tried all the Math I know, I tried the number line, I tried almost every confusing technique in the book. And then I decided to put the question on Facebook and it took Dabido an entire 2 seconds to come up with an answer after I told him it’s a logic question. Goes like this:-
6 = SIX = Three letters.
12 = TWELVE = Six letters.
And
10 = TEN = Three letters.
And that is why when I say 10, you say 3 and not 5. Just how simple was that? And yet I never thought about that. I think it’s about observation and IQ. Dabs took 2 IQ tests which told him he’s among the top 1% people in the world. So technically he’s a genius. But that doesn’t make me feel any better about myself! 2 days and I hadn’t even started thinking along those lines!
And then there’s the English which I tend to take too seriously for some reason I’ve been trying to find out for a while. There was another Flaw Detection question in which we were given a paragraph in which we had to find errors. One of the lines in the paragraph went:-
Harry Potter, the hero and Vandermot, the villain of the famous Harry Potter series were seen having tea together.
I read that line and up went my hand in the air. I had found the flaw! Here’s what happened:-
Me *raising hand*: Sir! Sir!
Sir: Yes?
Me: Sir! I found the flaw!
Sir: You did? What is the flaw?
Me: Sir, the villain in the Harry Potter series is called Voldemort, not Vandermot! Hee!
Sir: Oh come on.
Me: Yes sir! I know! How could they have been so silly?
Sir: Sir, we’re finding grammatical errors here. Not factual errors.
Me: Uh, but. But. Uh, alright.
But how can anybody just call Voldemort Vandermot? It’s almost a crime! It’s bigger than any grammatical error that there is! Not in the CAT though. After those rather inspiring incidents, I don’t know where this is gonna go. But it is kind of scary.
Have you noticed how June has so many birthdays? Nidhi had her birthday a few days back. Kriti had hers on Sunday. Reema had hers yesterday and its Ashish’s birthday today. Some month, eh?
The power situation out here is rather erratic. I think I’ll have to go back to spending my days like I did during one of those bad summers during the engineering coaching days. We knew the power cut timings so we’d go and park our asses at McDonalds or KFC for hours every day because they had their AC’s running. 30 bucks for 2 hours in the AC is a fair enough deal, I think. Agreed the coffee sucked but still, it was better than sitting at home doing nothing and getting fried in the heat. The only problem now is that I don’t have a friend to take along with me to KFC or McDonalds. I think I’ma have to make some new friends at the coaching place. Talking about McDonalds, their Chicken McNuggets are the end of the world. And the Barbecue Sauce that they provide with them is something beyond the end of the world. Talking about the end of the world, I saw Angels and Demons. I can’t decide if it was good as bad. If you compare it with the book, it was sad. Stand alone it was just about okay. If they’d taken Megan Fox for Vittoria Vetra, I would’ve said it’s good. That said, Megan Fox isn’t looking too hawt in the new Transformers promo. Transformers reminds me of Shia LaBeouf. He reminds me of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien (which is awesome, btw) and Conan’s show reminds me of Green Day. You totally have to watch the new 21 Guns video. Like NAO! And it’s right there on the Green Day link so you don’t even have to click anything extra. Do it, I tell you. PS – It’s high definition and so it might hurt certain dial-up and limited broadband connections. Don’t blame me if you overshoot your bandwidth!
Wimbledon is on. Nadal isn’t playing. Federer won his first match. But India is too busy cheering Sania Mirza on who’s managed to reach the second round. It’s like she’s won the title or something. But going by her current form, it is kind of big deal-ish. The grass at Wimbledon seems to be very slippery this year. I saw quite a few people falling around yesterday. Djokovic’s opponent – Julien Benneteau (Player Profile. He resembles Chris Martin a little.) had a rather bad day at the office but played well. He was running to play this lob shot and banged his knee into one of the walls (See here). Ouch, that must’ve hurt. Everything said, I hope Federer wins. And if Maria Sharapova can somehow end up winning too, then nothing like it.
Even I didn’t get the 10 turn to 5 part at first. I was hoping for Calvin’s Transmorgifier to have something to do with it!
Haven’t tried the McNuggets as yet. It’s always ‘out of stock’ in Bangalore.
PS” 21 Guns video is out? =0
@Balu: Lol, I tried everything. But did you get it in the end or did you have to read the solution? I have a sinking feeling that I have an unbelievably low IQ. I wouldn’t know how much exactly because I never took IQ tests. I hate taking tests because I hate measuring my skills. I’d rather live as such.
The McNuggets are out of stock?! Fucking people actually eat them out there? They’re horrible if you ask me. I would advise you to stay away from them. I wonder how much they paid the guy in the advert. To eat six pieces of that crap and still be smiling is tough. Very tough.
Yes, the 21 Guns video is out! It came out Saturday I think. You HAVE to go watch it!
Okay, I’ll take your advice and maintain arms length distance from Mr nuggets.
No man, didn’t get IQ thingy till you explained it. If IQ stood for Intellect Quotient rather than Intelligence Quotient, I might have stood a chance because, I can go on a rant for hours and make it sound all intellectual.. Buhahaha…
LOL. This post is funny. Ok, I now its not, but you know, it is. Did that make sense? Ok its like, there’s this underlying humor, like a dark kind of humor. Oh hell, whatever. And omg, that 10=3 wala question totally stumped me too. Incidentally, what is the grammatical error? My English is so totally sucky these days. :/
I’m not watching Wimbledon. Its boring. And the TV room is hot. Like summer wala hot, ok?
@Nids: I know what you mean. It’s meant to be funny etc, so yea, laugh. That 10 = 3 question almost killed me. And to have somebody answer that in 2 seconds like its a piece of cake hurts much more, you know? And there is no grammatical error there. That is why I was the only guy who raised the hand and the entire situation got even more embarrassing. The grammatical error was in the next line. I’ve realised how my English actually sucks too. This MBA thing has been quite a revelation. And I don’t think I need to tell you that I really didn’t need that.
Wimbledon is boring abhi, yeah. I wanted to watch the Murray match but there’s no electricity like EVER. Bah, I just hope I get to see the final. Oh, and Federer should be there, that goes without saying. Why would I be watching it otherwise?
VANDERMONT!! thats a MAJOR flaw!!
and dat logic question is exactly why i do not want to do mba,,biotech itself eats up ur brains!
good luck with that!
Aaaah .. That was a nice logic question ?? .. Do they ask such questions in CAT ??
I say near by IIM-A .. so if u r coming to IIM-A, let me know .. We’ll party ..
Best of luck for the results and enjoy ur vacation !! .. Dont take life too seriously buddy , nobody gets out alive anyways !!
VANDERMONT!! What were they thinking??
And think there is a way to condition your brain to solve questions like the 10=3 one. The more you practice, the more your brain will be able to process such questions.
In mathematics, I think the trick is to learn new tricks to answer questions rather than actually solving them. You won’t have that much time in the exam. :)
And, yeah, I know its very hot in India. Yaha to temperature 20 degrees se upar nahi jata. :P 20 is too hot for them and all the clothes of the janta here comes off. Which is good in a way. ;)
MBA coaching classes? Sounds pretty cool! Hey, that 3 for 10 was pretty cool…even i had thought it was gonna be five! And lol, Vandermont for Volfermort. If JK Rowling were to hear that, she would definitely have sued them.
Well, here it’s just as hot as it’s there. But it’s not so humid, you know. And of course, there are no powercuts. Praise the Lord!
I pwned you twice! \m/
Btw, that sentence isn’t completely correct — you need to stick in a comma after “hero,” and one after “villain/series”:
“Harry Potter, the hero, and Vandermot[sic], the villain, of the famous Harry Potter series, were seen having tea together.“
@Aditi: Indeed it was. I actually like the logic questions, by the way. I like them eating up my brain. But I hate the maths, I just don’t have the brains for that. Could be an excuse but I really think I don’t. I’ve had my fair share of Biotech, btw. I took it as an optional subject in the 11th and it was quite a handful. Good luck to you, too!
@Soham: Yes, that is the sort of questions they ask in the CAT. In fact, this was a relatively simpler one. They ask questions which confuse you more than that.
Lol, if I make it to IIM-A (which is highly unlikely), I will definitely visit you.
I’m not taking life too seriously. I don’t think I’ve ever done that. I might not have been in such soup if I had. But I’m not complaining. I’m fairly happy.
@Amit: Beats me sir! How can you commit that kind of an error? It’s just..unbelievable!
I’m sure practice helps in solving those kind of questions but you need to have a knack for observation to be really good at them. I get easily distracted while doing the questions and hence I often get the answer wrong. But I think we can fix that, and in a while we would.
I know about maths. New tricks is what they teach us at the coaching. Everybody knows how to multiply obviously, but the trick is how to do it fast. So they’re teaching us Vedic Mathematics for that. I was beginning to gain a little bit of confidence about my maths but then I did a paper today and I was able to solve only one out of the 25 questions which is pretty bad. Maths needs a lot of work.
Yeah, I heard England is good as far as the weather is concerned. It must be hot in London, though. I heard it was 35 degrees at the Flushing Meadows the other day. Are you into soccer or Tennis? How far is Wimbledon from your place? And how far is Old Trafford?
And yea, clothes coming off is always good, in any which way. :P
@Mahi: It just sounds cool. It starts to get on your nerves after a while. Well, it hasn’t exactly started getting on mine yet but it might soon. And yea, 5 was the obvious answer. The first thing they tell you if you intend to take CAT is that quit expecting the expected. If you get an answer without much thinking, it’s most definitely wrong. And it happens all the time. Lol yea, JK Rowling would have been pissed for sure.
Hot is still okay. Humid sucks. And power cuts make it worse. You don’t have ANY power cuts? Like none what so ever? Where are you, like, now?
@Vasudha: 100-2 stands the current score. I’ll get back at you some day. It’ll take 98 days if I go at an average of 1 pwn per day. That way we might be even or I might be ahead by my birthday.
I had to read your answer. I got 5. :(
Great going man ! All the best. You would be in a better position after doing all that for the next 2 years.
Hey thanks for the mention! Read this post long back but commenting now. MBA eh? Never liked the stream somehow. I guess I suck at logic.
“Harry Potter, the hero and Vandermot, the villain of the famous Harry Potter series were seen having tea together.”
I think not only Vandermort is wrong but also the very idea of them having tea together is wrong AND IMPOSSIBLE!
And I am in love with Chicken McNuggets!!
It amazes me how you always manage to find Chris Martin look alikes!
Lol =))
That was a hilarious post. [so not an understatement]
@Xylene: You had to, too? Well, that helps my ego. :P
I would be in a better position if I stick to doing this for another two years. IF being the key word. :P
@Reema: Oh You’re welcome. I actually like MBA for some reason. Obviously I don’t like the coaching part and the test part but the part that might happen after it seems interesting.
And lol, they did explain that situation. It was a fancy dress thing, one guy was dressed up as Harry and one as Voldy and they were friends in real life, etc. You love Chicken McNuggets? Ugh! Ugh!
@Priya: Ahaha, I know! But he does look like Chris, doesn’t he? And so does the Morrisson guy. I guess Chris has a really common face or something. Gwyneth Paltrow must get really confused. “Mera pati kaun, mera pati kaun?!”
@Anamika: Heyo! Thanks for visiting! I’m glad you thought this was hilarious! :D
Lol! Nice post.
Nice analogy about doing MBA ["Besides, I know it’s not my aim. It’s just one of those things that you need to do in order to facilitate the achievement of the aim, or basically just to shut everybody up and to make them let you be on your own."].
So you like Megan too. No biggie. The entire population of straight guys who’ve seen her does.
And THIS is where you mention Chicken Nuggets! I didn’t know you meant ‘they suck’ when you say they’re the end of the world. o.O
I’d suck with Eng if I ever sat for the CAT. I might pass in Logic though! =)
I could do this question!
[That's cuz I've read it elsewhere though. Not cuz I'm superbrainygenius.]
I keep on laughing seeing your post, you are great creator.I went to your blog it is totally wonderful,i like to add your link in my blog.If u are interested go through my blog and if u like add my link in your blog. All the Best.
Ok shit. I have to join MBA classes now.
Dude, what are you saying? Have you seen Megan Fox’s opening scene clippings in Transformers 2?!! They’re Hawwsommee!
And yeah. Am I the only one in this country who’s having absolutely no powercuts at all?
:) Nice post, brother.
Anyways, you still haven’t added me in your “Rolling Blogs” Widget. Can’t I get one? :(
