Oscars and Elections.
So then, Indians and Maa have finally made their way to the Oscars and we hope that in the years to come, Nirma ki doodh si safedi, Rupa ki andar ki baat and Sunny Deol ka dhaai kilo ka haath will also reach the Kodak Theater in LA. But one guy who’ll be left behind in India would be the Bollywood ka baap because he’s never done anything good in his life. Either mera baap chor hai or else mere baap ke 4 affair aur 10 najayaz bachche hain. Now the only way he can make it to the Oscars is if he can pronounce the word Millionaire in 10 different ways and manage to be wrong each time. We can’t deny him then, can we? His simple argument would be – Dude, you took Anil Kapoor along and that’s the only thing he did in Slumdog. Except being generally annoying AND calling a contestant on your show a chaiwallah AND trying to hog a lot of limelight. Er, now that’s quite a lot, isn’t it? The only way I can justify that is that he’s Sonam Kapoor’s dad and she’s looking hot in Delhi-6. But that’s just me.
Just yesterday, Ruhi said and I quote (gee, I really should quit watching CNN-IBN), ” Now we’ll have all Indian blogs blogging about the greatness of Slumdog Millionaire. All posts will be mirror images of each other.”. Well, she was pretty accurate there. I saw many Indian blogs writing posts about Slumdog’s brilliantness. I agree with Ruhi when she says that Slumdog didn’t deserve to be the best movie. Danny Boyle for best director is agreed but Slumdog wasn’t THAT great to have deserved best movie. Both of A.R. Rahman’s awards were well deserved though. That said, I don’t think Slumdog was his best. Roja, Swades, Dil Se, Bombay and many more hidden here and there were much better. But they didn’t reach the Oscars, Slumdog did and that’s what counts in the end. The sheer humbleness of that guy is amazing. Wonder how he does that.
The attitude of the Indian news channels and the general Indian public towards the Oscars has changed a lot after Slumdog’s success. The same people who would talk about the Oscars being elitist and trying to ignore mainstream movies are found talking about their fairness now. Just because Slumdog won? Right. Smile Pinki won, that was good. Heath Ledger also won, that was much deserved. And I loved the way his family acted. Kate Winslet also won, so all in all I think the Oscars were pretty neat. If only they’d nominated Dark Knight in the best picture category. Didn’t want it to win but definitely wanted it to be there.
Among other things, LK Advani’s been doing a lot of e-campaigning lately. Bloggers have been receiving e-mails asking them to support Mr. Advani. They’re really trying their asses off to woo first time voters. Do they think we’re dumb? Well, they probably do. Elections are one point when voters are God. They can ask for anything ranging from money to booze. Ugh, I just had a really disturbing image of LK Advani emerging out of a lamp as a Genie. Well, I’ve got my 3 wishes ready :-
1. Stop sending us e-mails.
2. Shut down your website.
3. Go back into the lamp. AND STAY THERE!
Oh and I totally have to mention the video of the song Pichle Saat Dinon Mein from Rock On. I just love it for the sheer visual delight of watching Sir Arjun Rampal play the most complicated leads on the guitar without even moving his hands on the fretboard. There’s one instance in the movie where Farhan Akhtar says that Joe ke haath mein jadoo hai. I think what he really meant was that there’s such magic in Joe’s hands that he doesn’t even have to move them on the fretboard. Chords and frets apne aap hi change ho jaati hain. I guess the chords and the frets felt pity for Rampal. Bechaara ek aadmi itne kaam kaise karega? Especially someone like Arjun Rampal who has to work really hard to move the 4 movable muscles on his face. How can you expect him to play the guitar properly as well? Itna Emosanal Atyachaar?! Tauba tauba!
Here’s the video, just for kicks.
If Advani becomes PM, what would be last nail in the coffin of Indian democracy. Yes it has died already, but sealing the coffin means it can never be resurrected now ;)
And slumdog, oh myy gaawwdd! If that deserved the best pic. then all the amitabh bachchan movies of the ’70s era also do.. because there is no difference.. its the same dish by a british chef… Its so grossly over-rated I can’t believe sane people occupy it. Anil Kapoor to sach mein aise behave kar raha hai ki film ka hero wo hi hai.. cheepo and I don’t get it why the people of india are so excited? It wasn’t an Indian film! But it got Rehman some recognition, and it was time he got some too.. and Danny got his award which he deserved for many other movies if not this one… i don’t know what its come to.. such an excellent film like the dark knight ignored at the oscars like this…
Ok, in previous comment.. its “that would be” in the first line, not “what would be”
sry
saw an article in the paper a few days back with a pic of advani lifting a pair of dumbbells in the air after inaugurating a gym…. that pic had me laughing the entire day … its articles like that which have me looking forward to the elections….
i agree about slumdog millionaire……….. it did not deserve being the Best Movie….. the movie had loads of hype built up which ,in my opinion, in didn’t meet… it was good but not brilliant…..
I am happy for Rehman, he truly deserves the awards. I liked Benjamin Button a lot and was hoping that it would win. Slumdog was fine and it was entertaining and there are very few examples when entertaining movies win Oscars.
Aur, Advani, hmmmm….bhagwan jaane iss desh ka kya hoga!!!
hahhahahhaa so true :))))) But, I guess all of India is jubiliant and I guess the reaction of the junta has something to do with psyche!
Somehow it is inbuilt amongst us that goras are the best… whatever they do, is what is right… could be the result of british raj… but, the point is that… finding a place amongst what the world thinks are the best.. and being acknowledged as a country full of talent, is something we have been alluded all this while… itne saalon ke baad jake we have seen some glimpse of hope wherein we shared the stage with the best of the best in the world and deserved every bit of it… I think THAT is huge!!
And u r right when u said, ARR has done much better work before… it is only now that the world is waking up to him… He has just arrived!
Well, I am one of few people who didnt go gaga about it.

SM was good but nothing remarkable. Yet I rooted for Rehman’s awards, knowing well that he has done superior work in other movies. I am glad he got Oscar.
And you are right, any newspaper I go there is link to adavani’s blog in a colourful ad.
Forget newspapers, Lal Krishna Advani stares at me everytime I check the Techcrunch feed after EVERY post. You better shut up though, you might face libel. :P [Don't worry, we'll free you. Even if we can't we'll erect a statue in your memory. :P ]
Am I the only one who hasn’t seen Slumdog yet? :P
Ah, yes, I noticed that too! Haath mein jadoo, indeed. :)
:) nice blog you have there.. managed to read quite a few posts of yours and well could relate to most of them. been there done that kind of a thing.
ya well my blog boasts a post on slumdog too but it was before it won an oscar.. ;)
and i agree that arjun rampal was bad at fakin the guitar.. thank god they did not ask him to lip sync the songs.. :)
While someone(another Indian) was going ga ga about ARR, I told them may be ARR deserves an Oscar but Jai ho is not the Oscar winning material and reply I got was – because you Indians like tandoori nights kind of songs and music. :|
oh and that wont work..changed my url.. :)
I totally agree with you…slumdog wasnt all that good…It dint deserve the Best picture award…I hate the way India is portrayed in that movie…I couldnt eat peacefully after seeing that CRAP scene…Even the Taj was shown in a bad way…
And Rehman has done better better work…RDB,Dil se and many more are his better creations…But iam happy for him…That man is GOD!…I am happy for gulzar too…jai ho lyrics makes some sense….
Dark Knight deserved a nomination at least…That movie made my brain work man!…@Advani…Screw him…Khuda jane what will happen to Bharat..@#Rock on…Farhan is smoking hawt!:P
and i thought heath will win best actor ..
i really wanted him ..i never knew he was nominated for supporting role
and about slumdog i have alreayd rwritten a post ..
the movie was no way a oscar movie
yech…the crap scene in slumdog millionaire…..i’d successfully managed to bury that deep down in the “do not open unless u want to skip dinner” section of my memory…..that was seriously gross…….and yes…rehman totally deserved his oscar……
i was very surprised when dark knight wasn’t listed in the nominations for best movie…….had considered it a shoo-in for best movie after watching it……
yeah this link should work..
@Perx: Yeah, most of the youth seems to think so but clearly Advaniji and BJP don’t. They’ve spent so much on e-campaigning that it seems they’re expecting the entire generation to come up and vote for them.
I agree with whatever you’ve said about Slumdog but India always has this tendency of “claiming” things which are somehow related to them. I’ve seen this happening when you have NRI’s who don’t give two hoots about the country becoming popular. Everyone wants to bring home the fact that they were essentially Indian.
@Jalal: OMG LOL, was that picture a joke or was he really inaugrating the gym? Must’ve been hilarious!
@Amit: Yes, Rahman definitely deserved the awards. The Oscar people would be surprised if they hear Roja, Taal, Dil Se etc. I thought Jai Ho wasn’t that great a song. And then I heard this version of Pussycat Dolls doing it, totally destroyed the entire song.
Yeah, entertaining movies don’t usually win Oscars. Poor Dark Knight wasn’t even nominated.
@Nova: Yes, I think the reaction is justified to some extent as well. It’s been a long time and finally people know there’s a country called India. Although Slumdog didn’t exactly show a rosy image of the country but nonetheless, it has arrived.
Yes, we have never been able to get over the superiority of the British. How else can you explain the fetish for fair skin?
@Poonam: Yes, I know. That is why I said most people would go gaga by it. You somehow always manage to hit the point. I couldn’t agree with that post more.
Yeah, SM was a good movie as such but nothing extraordinary. Personally I’d rather give Swades the Oscar. But that movie never really reached the places it should have. And I loved Rahman’s music in that as well. That guy is a genius and totally deserves all the adulation he’s getting.
Yeah, newspapers, blogs, technology websites. Advaniji is everywhere.
@Ashish: Oh yea, I noticed him on Techcrunch too. But I really should shuttup now. :P
@Vasudha: Oh well, I was there in that list till some days back too but finally I decided to take the dip. Didn’t live up to the hype for me, at least. Anil Kapoor did a good job at destroying it. So all in all, no need to run and catch it. You can always watch it when it comes around.
Oh you did? I thought I was the only one cause everyone would say he was “convincing”. Well, only KD was convincing for me. Thank God Rampal didn’t have anymore dialogues. He could have ruined it. He’s only there to hold the guitar and look good, I guess.
@Aditi: Hey! Thanks for visiting the blog. I’m glad you identify with what I’ve written. Quite a few of us have been there and done that, don’t you think?
I think every Indian blogger must’ve written a post about Slumdog, maybe positive or negative. It got A LOT of hype. Most of the initial reviews were awed by the movie and the ones who thought it was just okay started trickling in pretty late.
@Anshul: Ouch, that was a horrible reply. I would’ve really kicked that person. Such people say they can’t hear anything bad about their country. I guess they don’t even understand what that means. Oh wait, was this guy even Indian?
@wasshappening: Yes, Slumdog had it’s moments but it wasn’t all that good. I liked the crap scene by the way. The idea behind that was pretty neat. But yea, the scene as such was disgusting visually.
Rahman totally deserved the Oscar and I wish Gulzar was there too. He’s very unknown comparatively. Him and Javed Akhtar have written many many nice songs. Javed Akhtar is still a bit more popular. The lyricists don’t get their due, I think.
Dark Knight deserved a nomination absolutely. Its cinematography, story and Heath Ledger all combined to make it something extraordinary. Sadly it was very mainstream and the Oscars don’t really consider that. They need something different. Bah!
@Arvind: Nah, Heath Ledger was never gonna win best actor. He wasn’t the protagonist in the movie, so. It was always gonna be supporting actor and I was very sure he’d win it. He was a great guy and I loved the courage which his family showed while accepting the award.
I think Slumdog is an Oscar movie, but not really an Oscar best movie. I think Danny Boyle deserved Best Director for going in a somewhat unchartered territory.
@Jalal: Lol yeah, wasn’t a very rememberable scene, that.
@Aditi: Yep, I got the link, thanks!
Just dropping by.Btw, you website have great content!

@ish : hello to u too …. :P ….and yes he was actually inaugurating the gym…… consider it to be one of the many things done for our entertainment before the elections….
Yeah.
I totally agree with you over your comments on Arjun Rampal for his act in Rock On!.
He totally looked and acted like a true “poser”.He actually personified the word called “poser” and if you look at the last song “Sinbad the Sailor”.
He totally sucked in his act and I guess it must have been a dreadful scene for all the guitarists seeing such a cheap(for them) act on the big screen.
Hey man.Great blog and interesting content out here.
