Drenched in childhood memories.

So the crash course officially ended today. At times it was good, at times it was okay and at times it was plain old boring. But it had it’s moments. Here are some things I might remember from it for the times to come:-

  • The hot chick who almost crashed into me.
  • The cute chick who wasn’t exactly hot but was err..cute. You know what I mean, right? Anyway, I haven’t talked about her here so nevermind.
  • The pranks on the Maths teacher. The kids asked him to switch on the exhaust fan one day and as soon as he touched the button, someone screamed and the Maths guy jumped where he was standing. He thought he had gotten an electric shock. His expression was priceless. Nope, it wasn’t like Katrina Kaif’s expressions. Wait a minute, does Katrina Kaif have expressions? Naa!
  • The translating English songs into Hindi during the boring Physics classes. Me and my friend successfully translated Boulevard of Broken Dreams from Greenday to ‘Toote Sapno ka Chauraaha’ by Hara Din. So if you listen to it ten years down the line, you’ll know it’s a rip off. I would have posted it here but the thing is that my friend wants to put it on his Orkut account so I decided not to double post it. I will make the text file available some day though, it still needs some finishing touches.
  • The imagining the Physics, Chemistry and Maths teachers as members of the band Greenday. Now you know I’m obsessed with Greenday. The maths teacher was my Billie Joe Armstrong, the Physics teacher was my Mike Dirnt and the Chemistry teacher was my Tre Cool. But then one fine day the Maths teacher got a haircut and ruined it all. His hair was the reason I had made him Billie. And without Billie, there is no Greenday. *sob*

Some girls are funny. Some wet girls are funnier. And then there are girls like Drenched, who are 10,000 million times funnier than any wet girl you’ve ever met. And she thinks she’s having a writer’s block. So she tagged me to write some things about my childhood and here I am, trying to remember ‘em. By the way, did you notice how amazingly I framed the title of this post? You’ve got to give it to me, you seriously have to. And I know I’m bragging way too much. And I don’t care..

Everyone’s so full of shit
Born and raised by hypocrites
Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradle to the grave

We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the Middle East
We are the stories and disciples of
The Jesus of Suburbia

Land of make believe
And it don’t believe in me
Land of make believe
I don’t believe in me

I don’t care
I don’t care
I don’t care
I don’t care
I DON’T CARE!

Wow, my randomness surprises me at times. Back to the childhood:-

  • I remember this one incident when I tied a string to my He-Man tiger Battlecat and tied the other end of the string to my bed. Then I hung all sorts of action figures from the string. And finally I took a photograph of it. I think I still have that photograph, but I lost the tiger and all the action figures.
  • I distinctly remember my nursery school headmaster. I was really shy back then and she made me the reasonably conversable person that I am today. I remember her coming to our house once and me showing off my toys.
  • I remember my bench partner from Class 2 or 3. She was brilliant and I was lousy. I was shy and she was a menace. I remember her torturing me by stealing my sharpener. And I used to keep cribbing about it. Some guy I was. She was in my class for 5 or 6 more years after that but we never really talked after that year. Our school never encouraged boys and girls talking to each other. When I entered 12th standard, again she was in my class. We weren’t partners but everything else was the same. She was still brilliant and I was still lousy.
  • I remember being slapped for no reason once. I had, for the first time in my life, taken part in a dance during the annual function of my school. And I was made partners with this girl who really hated me for some reason. One day they had made a chalk line in front of us and had asked not to step on it. The girl deliberately stepped on it and when the teacher asked who had done it, she pointed towards me. And thwack! Some slap that was.
  • Then after some years I participated in another dance and I had a friend who was also participating. We had to wear a dhoti for the dance and they said that we should tie the dhoti from home and then wear pants and then remove the pants at the time of the performance. And this friend of mine came without wearing an underwear. So when the teacher told us to take off the pants, this guy went ahead too and the teacher was like OMGWTF! And everyone else in the class was like ROFLMAO. Finally they had to let him perform with the jeans on. Guess nobody told him that The Underwear Goes Inside the Pants. Has anyone else heard that song too?
  • I remember being extremely scared of mathematical tables. Whenever I would be asked to recite them, I’d get an instant stomach ache. The same thing would happen during the exams. I used to be real anxious about my performance back then. It seems funny now. I used to be scared back then when I knew everything and these days, even though I don’t know anything, I’m more confident than the topper of the class.
  • I remember cribbing over TV channels with my cousin brother. He was in his wrestling watching age and I was in my cartoon watching age. And I always used to win because I was younger. And when my cousin’s mum would go out, he used to try them stunts on me. I can’t even remember how many Chokeslams he’s given me. But I love him.
  • I remember being awed by my Nanaji. There was something about him..there was just this aura around him. He used to be very strict and very impatient but at the same time he used to love me. He was the strongest human being I’ve ever known in my life. Despite having so many health problems, he never really looked weak and had this amazing willpower to come out of anything. That’s why I still can’t believe that he’s dead.
  • I remember my Nanima buying chipps for me whenever I’d visit her place. It used to be a lot of fun there because I was pampered to no end. She still pampers me. I also remember my Dadima making all those delicacies exclusively for me. I’d only have to utter the word and they would be there in front of me. She’s the one who sits and listens to what I’ve got to say when I’m sad. Even though she believes in God and I don’t, her God related stories do manage to soothe me down. I can’t imagine living without her.
  • I remember my mom as always being concerned about my performance and my dad always being busy with his work. I know my mom and dad love me but somehow I don’t really remember any particular instance of it. I remember my mum waking up nights with me and making me write all the spellings until they were perfect. I also remember my dad forgetting which class I was in.

***

That’s about it for now then. And I will not exactly be available tomorrow and day after because I have to go to Chandigarh for my AIEEE examination. The PFHOI contest will be updated either late Sunday or early Monday.

Getting slapped for no reason seems to be the thing for me. Either it’s the didis in the school bus or extra-pakaur teachers or even my 2 year old cousin. ab to aadat si ho gayi hai!

And that dhoti thing was so damn funny!

And I always lose when it comes to Parents-solving-brother-sister-fights. It’s as if I’m the adopted one and she is the marvel. At least she thinks so.

Haha, the bench partner at class 2/3 had me laughing. I can’t imagine the number of times I’ve fought for a pencil / sharpener or an eraser. My worldly possessions!! Ah.. if only I could go back….

Even I had a bench partner in 3rd class and once we had this fancy dress competition and she turned into Seeta that day(when she goes to Banwaas). She was wearing this orange saree with rudraksh n all and I fell in love with her that day. God knows where she is now.
Anyways, great collection of memories…something very similar to mine. :D Mazza aaya padh ke. And best of luck for the exam. Do well.
p.s. : After much pondering, I have decided to finally believe that photograph was yours.

Hey…parents do tend to forget and are strict now more than ever. Even my dad used to forget which class and even which standard I was in. I had once mixed up the paper dates of my final exams and had to attempt for a Hindi paper instead of what I thought was the Marathi paper. So that’s all part of growing up. We remember these memories of goofing up more than any other memories.

    Nice post to read..!

So the cute chick is the one you were telling me about? :)

That dhoti memory is amazing. lol. Never been slapped in school as our school followed a strict policy for teachers to not beat students. The most dastardly punishment in class was a kneel down or during P.E. to run 10 rounds of the ground. :D

I’ll read all your childhood memories list when I have time at hand. Also, telling you I read your reply to the comment in the Shoes post but didn’t get around to replying to it. Don’t think I’m a blog snob.
I successfully (almost) translated Mockingbird by Eminem with my friend. What made it even funnier was the literal meanings in Hindi. For example … wait I’ll have to search for it. Actually, I’ll post it when I find it.

We named the animals around our neighborhood like that. A good looking cat becomes ‘Billie Joe’ (Geddit? Billie, as in, cat!) and a bad looking cat becomes ‘Billie Joel’. A puppy becomes ‘Dhanraj Pilla’ (Geddit? Pilla, as in, pup!) and a full grown dog becomes ‘Snoop Dogg’.

Okay, that’s very stupid. But anyhow, we did that years ago and best of luck for AIEEE.

I too remember being pampered by my Nani. She still does. And yes I remember fighting over possessions like picture postcards, stamps and stickers with my sister.

Poor Greenday, they couldn’t have imagined what a desi translation of the song can sound like. :)

Best of luck for your exam!

@Sneezy Melon: Lol, I can almost imagine you standing in your bus and singing “Ab toh aadat si hai mujhko aise jeene mein..” and one of the didi’s gets up and slaps you. And then you go “Eh hee aaa heeoaoda… etc”. :P

Amongst sibling fights, I’ve realized that marks/intelligence and brilliance also play a role. When I was young, I was pretty bright and my cousin was 16 or 17 that time and wasn’t doing too well in studies. Now he has a cool job and I’m doing extremely badly in the studies. If we decide to fight now, I’m sure everybody will think he’s right.

@PO BOX: Yea, I used to be very possessive about my pens and pencils when I was younger. But she used to steal that sharpener just to annoy me. She was a brat then. Now she’s like the shareef padhaaku types. It’s funny how people change. But I don’t have a right to say that to anybody, even I’ve changed from a shareef padhaaku ladka to a semi-shareef but definitely not padhaaku ladka.

@Amit: LOL, you were pretty aware in class 3 eh? Matlab you had a girl proposing to you in 2nd and you fell in love with Seeta in 3rd. Good hai yaar, mereko toh 5th class tak pata hi nahi tha ki you’re supposed to after girls. We used to hate them..kyunki school aisi feelings propagate karta tha ladke ladkiyon ko overfriendly hone se rokne ke liye. Waise I need to talk to my principal and tell her that it’s a wrong approach. In this way you’re crippling their personality. Bade hokar kabhi ladkiyon ke saamne theek se open up hi nahi ho payenge.

And chalo, finally I managed to convince you ki mera hi photo tha. Chak de, India! :P

@Maddie: Yea, I know! Parents are very busy these days and it’s not their fault. Things have changed a lot. Work load is more, stress is more, you need more money and all that and it gets difficult to cope in the end. Children think it’s easy being parents but it definitely isn’t. And you’re right about the goof-up’s too. They are most memorable because they’re embarrassing and sometimes they bring you closer to friends and stuff like that.

@Nidhi: And finally, someone appreciate’s the title! Too bad Drenched hasn’t even read this till now. I think she’s gone on a hiatus or something till Tuesday.

I remember my Nanaji yea. My Nani lives in Chandigarh so we’d gone there..that’s why I had filled for Chandigarh actually because it doesn’t happen in Ludhiana and we thought that we’d meet her too. And my Nani and I talked a lot that night..she keeps crying still. And I think I’ve told you that there’s family issues as well. Pretty bad situation.

@Ashish: Yep, cute chick is the one I told you about. The cutest thing about her was her name. It’s ‘Petal’ in Hindi. Try guessing it. :P

And our school has been rather liberal with slaps and corporal punishment. We do get the ten rounds too but before that we get “Touch your toes and get the dose” on the ass. Thank God that teacher’s retired now. Asshole.

@Espera: It’s okay lol. I won’t think you’re a snob for not replying to comments. You need to do better than that. :P

Yep, I got your jokes. Pretty cool lol. We’ve done the Dhanraj Pillay one too but I don’t call billi’s Billie. But if I think about it, there’s this one Billie who sleeps on my scooter everyday. Maybe I should tell him/her to leave an autograph next time around. :D

@Perx: Thanks man. And I can see you’re getting really busy these days. Good but sad, you know.

@Shaivi: Nay, no developments with that chick. I told you that wasn’t gonna happen didn’t I? It would’ve been illogical. And anyway, one month is too less time for me to fall hopelessly in love and tell her that. Last time that happened, it took me two years to realize that I liked one girl and another year to talk to her. And when I did talk, guess what I asked? I asked her the time. That’s it, nothing else. :|

Real brother’s engagement! Nice! Congratulate him from my side too..though I dunno how you’ll do that. Kisi aur ke saath mera naam fit kar dena. Yaan waise hi bol dena meri female friend hai ishmeet. :P Weddings are cool. My closest cousin brother had his wedding last winter and it was very cool. Hell I even got drunk, in front of my parents. When they asked what I was drinking, I said it was Limca. Well, it wasn’t a total lie too. There was Limca mixed with Vodka in that glass. :P

And thanks for the wish. :)

@jeecarnot: I don’t know why I’m even replying. But trust me, I won’t click on that link even if it’s the last website on the internet. AIEEE guess results are the last thing I’d want now.

@Matangi: It was? I managed to get you dreaming? Wow. I seriously didn’t think it was nice and cute. I thought it was one of my half hearted attempts. But nonetheless, I’m happy. And thanks for visiting! :)

@kooldoodeonline: ROFLMAO = Rolling On the Floor Laughing My Ass Off. It’s pretty popular. :P

@Nova: Thanks!! And I really hope something better awaits me because I don’t think I did something exceptionally great at this.

@The Suda: I don’t know actually. I’ve had a reasonably comfortable life but it’s been sorta boring. I’ve heard better things. But I’m not sure if I’d wanna live them. I’m not exactly enthusiastic and brave for starters.

@Poonam: Dude, our Greenday rendition was very very cool. If we can ever manage to play the guitars and drums like they do, it’s gonna turn out to be great. How cool a title is “Toote Sapno Ka Chauraha”? We tried to put the entire feel of the song into it. Bas ab sirf ek gaane waala aur teen chaar bajaane waale chahiye.

@Riddhima: LOL thank you! But I’m sure it still wasn’t anywhere as cute and sweet as apna Brett Lee. ;)

ROFL @ the dhoti memory and the slapping incident! Hahahaha! I’ve never been slapped by a school teacher. I wish I had been, you know. I’d have liked to scream bloody murder and bring parents and child rights people to the school and all. Hmm, another regret added to my huge list. :/
BTW, awesome title! I love puns! =D Very punny, er, I mean, funny they are. =P
Oooh, and I’m not just funny. I’m hilarious, dude! (And still unbitten by the modesty bug =P)

OMG… I used to … ‘too’ translate hindi songs into english… during my physics class… Its so uncanny!

and LOL… at the Dhoti incident….. guess what when i was in school…. they had this bhangra performance… and a guy’s lungi came off while doing of the stunts… OMG I felt so sorry for him… anyways… it sort of reminded me that…

Nice post… sort of me nostalgic about my school days :)

@Riddhima: Lol, I know. Sadly he’s gone now.

@Shaivi: Yea, my experience with women hasn’t ever been anything to boast about. But yea, maybe things will change at some point of time. Even if it doesn’t, I’m not dying.

And well, about me being lucky, let’s just say my mother has a rather cool sister. She’s like she was born in a different generation. After that first time, it’s been sneaking and drinking. Even though I’m 18 but my parents don’t approve of that. Good luck with your first time..have something light because shuru mein nahi chadegi and then ekdum se you’ll be behosh. Start with erm..maybe Bacardi with Limca. That’s still my favorite.

    Paper was okay.

@Suda: Oi, Nova tagged me too. I’ll add your name to the list of the people who tagged me though.

@Drenched: I was a dumb kid then, I didn’t know shit about human rights and stuff and even if I did, nothing would have happened because my parents are teachers themselves and so they always think that the teacher is right. I don’t want them to testify against me in court. :P

And yea, you shure are hilarious, and overtly modest.

@Nidhi: I’ll email you about that. And yea, considering Ldh is such a huge city, it’s funny AIEEE doesn’t happen in here. Maybe they just wanna save money?

@Neetal: Wow, and I thought me and my friends were the only ones. And in the physics class too, brilliant!

And yea, wardrobe malfunctions are a part and parcel of school annual functions. Funny though that they happen with guys most of the times. ;)
